Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The cinema industry has long been a key player in urban entertainment culture, offering a social space for relaxation, education, and cultural exchange. In Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State, the presence of cinemas has played a significant role in shaping the entertainment preferences and social interactions of young adults. Cinemas provide more than just movies; they serve as venues for cultural engagement, fostering social interactions and community building. With the advent of digital media, the entertainment landscape has seen a shift, with many young adults turning to online platforms for their viewing needs. However, cinemas remain an important part of urban entertainment culture, especially for those seeking a communal, immersive experience that online platforms cannot fully replicate. The resurgence of cinemas in urban areas has also become a symbol of the revival of local entertainment practices, attracting young adults eager for an experience that includes the communal aspects of watching films in a theater (Ibrahim & Adebayo, 2023). For young adults in Ilorin West, cinemas are not just about watching films; they serve as a medium for cultural engagement, entertainment, and a sense of belonging to the urban landscape. This study will explore how cinemas contribute to the revival of urban entertainment culture among young adults in Ilorin West, examining the role they play in socializing, shaping cultural trends, and providing an outlet for urban youth to engage with modern and traditional forms of entertainment.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing availability of digital platforms for entertainment, cinemas in Ilorin West Local Government Area remain important cultural spaces for young adults. However, there is limited research on how cinemas are influencing urban entertainment culture and socialization in this specific region. As cinemas continue to compete with online platforms and other digital entertainment mediums, understanding their role in the urban entertainment culture becomes essential.
